Tel Aviv, 22 January 2020 (dpa/MIA) – The Israel Defence Forces late Tuesday said they had shot dead three Palestinians from Gaza who crossed into southern Israel and threw an explosive device at Israeli soldiers.
“We just identified 3 terrorists who crossed the security fence from #Gaza into #Israel. After our soldiers arrived at the scene, the terrorists hurled an explosive device at them, the IDF said on Twitter.
“In response, our soldiers opened fire at the terrorists,” the IDF said further. “Hits were identified.”
An army spokesman told the Haaretz newspaper that the Palestinians were killed in the incident. No-one on the Israeli side was injured.
In recent days Palestinian extremists have sent balloons with incendiary devices into Israel.
Israeli officials believe the Palestinian terror group Hamas is behind these escalating tensions, the Times of Israel reported.
According to Israeli officials, Hamas in the Gaza Strip is apparently expressing dissatisfaction with the sluggishness of negotiations over a longer-term ceasefire with Israel.
Israel tightened a blockade on the Palestinian coastal area more than a decade ago, a blockade which is also supported by Egypt.
Both countries justify the measure, which affects some 2 million people who live under difficult conditions in Gaza, based on security interests.
