Berlin, 26 October 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Thomas Opperman, vice president of Germany’s parliament, has died unexpectedly at the age of 66, sources have told dpa.
His death was also reported by broadcasters RTL and NTV, who said he collapsed while filming with broadcaster ZDF and was taken to hospital.
German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil said on Twitter that the news of Oppermann’s death filled him with great sadness.
The Bundestag deputy leader and Social Democrat (SPD) party politician had announced at the end of August that he would not run in the next parliamentary election.
“After 30 years as a representative of the Lower Saxony regional parliament and in Germany’s Bundestag, it’s now the right time for me to do something else again and take on new projects,” he said at the time.
