Melbourne, 24 January 2020 (dpa/MIA) – The illustrious career of Danish star Caroline Wozniacki has ended with a third round exit at the Australian Open at the hand of Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
The unpredictable game and power of Ons Jabeur, who upset 12th seed Johanna Konta on her way to the third round of the slam, proved too much for the 2018 champion, who was defeated 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in just over two hours.
The former world number one, in her final career appearance at the open before retiring, looked set for another epic comeback as she overcame a set and a break disadvantage to fight it out in a decider, but could not close off the upset.
After winning her lone slam in Melbourne two years ago, the Dane was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and closed 2018 with her lowest year-end placement since 2007.
Jabeur made it to through to the round of 16 of a slam for the first time in her career.
