Skopje, 1 July 2020 (MIA) – The first flight marking the reopening of airports in North Macedonia, three and a half months after they were closed for commercial flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic, landed Wednesday morning at the Skopje International Airport. The Turkish Airlines flight carrying 104 passengers from Istanbul to Skopje was welcomed with a water salute in a form of a rainbow. A Pegasus Airlines flight with 125 passengers, also arriving from Istanbul, landed soon after, TAV Macedonia posted across social media platforms on Wednesday.
The first passengers, one of the posts read, departed and arrived from and to Skopje International Airport complying with the new COVID-19 preventive travel rules.
“On the first day of the reopening of the Skopje International Airport, 28 flights, with 1,700 passengers are expected,” read another post.
The first flights to resume at the Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport are set for this afternoon to and from Zurich and Milan.
New protocols based on recommendations of the Commission for Infectious Diseases are in place at the two airports, the Health Ministry has said, and are in line with international standards. Only passengers will be allowed to enter the airport building, they will have to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight and wear a face mask, maintain safe physical distance and high level of hygiene at all times.
“A thermal camera has been installed at the airport building to screen the temperature of passengers entering the country. Those with elevated body temperature will be placed into an isolation room. Public Health Center staffers will also be to ask that any passenger they choose is tested,” the Health Ministry said.
In line with new measures, only those people who show their flight ticket (printed or on the phone) to the security staff can enter the terminal building and then go through a shoe disinfection path and have their body temperature measured by the thermal camera. If they do not have higher body temperature, passengers will be able to proceed to the registration or self-registration counters.
Moreover, passengers are not allowed to sit next to each other on the seats in the airport waiting areas, Departures, Arrivals and Gates, but will have to sit at the appropriate physical distance, and for that purpose the seats are specially marked.
