EU promises 33 million euros in emergency aid to Lebanon

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised 33 million euros (39 dollars) in emergency aid to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab when they telephoned on Thursday morning, following a massive explosion in Beirut that left the city in ruins.

Brussels, 6 August 2020 (dpa/MIA) – EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised 33 million euros (39 dollars) in emergency aid to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab when they telephoned on Thursday morning, following a massive explosion in Beirut that left the city in ruins.

The money is to be used for funding medical equipment, among other things.

“The Commission will consider further support depending on the ongoing humanitarian needs assessment,” it said in a press release.

Von der Leyen also “offered the EU’s support to carry out a full needs assessment for the city’s reconstruction and the recovery of the country.”
