Trump announces three-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia

Washington, 8 May 2026 (dpa/MIA) – US President Donald Trump has said Ukraine and Russia have agreed at his request to a three-day ceasefire from Saturday to Monday.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said the ceasefire "will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country."

"This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy," he wrote.

There was no immediate confirmation from Moscow or Kiev.

Russia had already announced a unilateral ceasefire from May 8 to cover celebrations marking Victory Day on Saturday, including the annual military parade in Moscow to commemorate the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Ukraine responded with a unilateral truce beginning May 6, but later withdrew it after it said Russia had continued with its attacks, including one of its largest drone strikes so far in the conflict.
