Skopje, 16 July 2026 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova said Thursday that a single electoral district is a good solution. Although as a solution it is applied in two or three countries, the President still believes that it is good to have it in our country as well.

"Although it is a rare solution, applied in two or three countries, it is still good to have it here because in different electoral districts, victory is achieved with a different number of votes. A vote should carry the same weight," Siljanovska Davkova said in an interview with Kanal 5 TV. 

As regards the diaspora, the President pointed out that according to the Constitution, the right to vote, regardless of whether it is active or passive, is tied to citizenship, and according to her, the current Electoral Code contains an odd regulation which discriminates against the diaspora.

"The largest number of countries in the world allow the diaspora to vote. Very few do not allow the diaspora to vote, and there are one or two countries in which, after 10 years, the diaspora can no longer vote. But what is odd in our country is that the diaspora votes in local elections, this is an unknown phenomenon," said Siljanovska Davkova.

It is impossible to send people to diplomatic and consular offices, she added, and therefore the most common solutions are electronic voting or voting by mail.

As regards remarks by the opposition that electronic voting could be an opportunity for electoral theft, the President said it was the opposition that enabled the electronic census.

"The opposition enabled electronic registration for the census, an unknown phenomenon because only those who have been abroad for 12 months at most are registered for the census. Here, they registered electronically and got included in the census results, which was contrary to the rules of the Council of Europe," Siljanovska Davkova pointed out.

According to her, it is good to reach a consensus on the Electoral Code. She believes that a consensus should be reached on paid political advertising.

On the caretaker government, which was abolished by a law, the decree of which she signed, Siljanovska Davkova said that the solution the country had was partisan.

"I am in favor of a caretaker government such as exists in Bulgaria, in Greece, in Italy. Their goal is to ensure fair and democratic elections, without any party influence. What we had is something completely different," said Siljanovska Davkova.
