Report: UEFA admit handball mistake in German Euro game against Spain

Hanover, 24 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) — UEFA have reportedly admitted that hosts Germany should have been awarded a penalty in their Euro 2024 quarter-final which they they went on to lose 2-1 against eventual champions Spain.

Spanish portal Revelo said on Monday that the referee commission of Europe's ruling body made the assessment in an analysis which helps brief top referees.

Revelo quoted the report as saying that "a penalty should have been given" when Spain player Marc Cucurella handled the ball during extra time of the July 5 game in Stuttgart, with the score 1-1 at the time.

English referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty and there was also no intervention from the Video Assistant Referee, which UEFA, according to Revelo, has now named a mistake.

"According to the latest UEFA guidelines, handball contact that prevents a shot on goal should be penalised more severely and in most cases a penalty kick should be awarded, unless the defender's arm is very close to the body or touching the body," UEFA said.

"In this case, the defender stopped the shot on goal with his arm, which is not very close to the body, making himself bigger, so a penalty should have been given."

Spain went on to win the match from a late header by Mikel Moreno. Cucurella was jeered by many - likely German - fans during the semi-final and final.
