Gostivar, 20 July 2026 (MIA) – Three people were arrested Monday by police after more than 1,500 people have been treated for suspected poisoning in Gostivar. All of them are top officials of Gostivar’s public utility company, local authorities have confirmed.

Police arrested the company’s head Artana Asani, technical director Leon Nuredini and the head of the water supply department Vadedin Dervishi.

They were arrested after an order was issued by the Gostivar public prosecution in relation to the rise in gastroenteritis cases in the Municipality of Gostivar.

An epidemic was declared on Sunday.

At a news conference in Skopje earlier today, health authorities said results from the lab analysis of the water from the city’s waterworks will be sent to the prosecutors as an investigation into suspected contamination is under way.
