Skopje, 22 July 2026 (MIA) – All competent authorities will cover the cost of the damages from yesterday’s storm according to the law, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Wednesday.

The government has mechanisms for disaster recovery assistance, he told reporters.

“This government has never abandoned the citizens on their own,” Mickoski said thanking the local authorities for acting on time to repair the damages. “They are continuing their activities today because it was an epic storm.”

According to the prime minister, after being assessed, damages will be covered by the authorities according to the law. 

According to the Interior Ministry, a severe storm hit the country on Tuesday with Skopje being hit the hardest. Until 10 pm, 117 damaged vehicles were reported, as well as 35 damaged roofs, 189 fallen trees, 7 traffic lights, 5 fires and 10 people with injuries.

Also, several facilities considered of vital importance suffered damages, including the building of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Villa Vodno presidential residence, the Petrovec Airport Police Base, the Nova Makedonija building, as well as the buildings of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture. Due to a roof leak, operations for existing the country were halted for 1,5 hours at the Skopje International Airport. 

After 5 pm in the Skopje region following the storm yesterday, over 9,000 calls were registered by the 112-emergency number.

22 people sought medical assistance at the St. Naum of Ohrid University Clinic for Surgical Diseases in Skopje after yesterday’s storm, including two who were later admitted. Also, eleven people, including three with serious fractures, were taken to the University Clinic of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Diseases.
