Government announces diesel price reduction by Mden 6.5

Skopje, 30 May 2026 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expects a stabilization of prices and a reduction in diesel fuel prices by around Mden 6.5.

Speaking in response to journalists’ questions on Saturday, Mickoski said that the country is expected to maintain some of the lowest fuel prices. He also announced that an online government session will be held on Sunday.

“Tomorrow we will hold an online government session. Based on our calculations and analysis of global market trends over the past two weeks and last week, we expect fuel prices to gradually stabilize. That is, the previously reduced VAT rate for gasoline from 10% will return to 18%, while the excise duty reduction of two denars per liter for diesel and for unleaded petrol 95 and 98 octane will remain in place, because the average in the second half of May for diesel and unleaded gasoline ranged between US$1,000 and 1,200 per ton. We are also negotiating with OKTA for a possible additional discount for early June. Taking all factors into account, gasoline prices are expected to remain stable or increase slightly, while diesel is expected to drop by around Mden 6 to 6.5,” he said.

According to him, the past three months were dynamic, but the government managed to maintain price stability.

“At no point did citizens experience any restrictions in the supply of oil and petrol. At the same time, there was enormous pressure on petrol stations, with demand rising by around 50% on some days compared to normal levels. When all of this is concluded, including the expected developments on Monday, we will remain a country with by far the lowest fuel prices for diesel and petrol. If our estimates are correct, gasoline prices will remain stable or increase slightly by Mden 0.5, while diesel is expected to fall by 6 to Mden 6.5 per liter. We remain committed to improving the living standards of citizens,” he said.
