Skopje, 13 August 2026 (MIA) – The Ohrid Framework Agreement put peace, dialogue and equality at the core of building a sustainable society. Our responsibility today is to build on its lessons and turn them into lasting standards of democracy and coexistence, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said Thursday on the occasion of the agreement’s anniversary.

“Today, as we mark the anniversary of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, we recall one of the most important moments in the modern history of the Republic of North Macedonia. The agreement represented a political and institutional response to a crisis that called for responsibility, dialogue and a vision for the future. Above all, it put peace, dialogue and equality at the core of building a sustainable society. Twenty-five years later, its significance must be viewed beyond political divisions and everyday interpretations. The Ohrid Agreement remains an important pillar of the constitutional and institutional architecture of our country. Our responsibility today is to build on its lessons and turn them into lasting standards of democracy and coexistence,” Speaker Gashi said.

He said that the Republic of North Macedonia is a common home for all its citizens and that its strength lies not in the differences that divide us, but in our ability to turn those differences into shared values.

“After a quarter of a century, the question we must ask ourselves is no longer what we have achieved, but what we have yet to leave to future generations, the state we want. Therefore, let this anniversary be a shared commitment: today’s political generation and institutions must preserve peace through dialogue, strengthen equality and build coexistence through action. Let every future generation inherit the Ohrid Agreement as a turning point in history and as a living value of the state. Ultimately, it is the citizens who have the strength to live it every day,” Gashi said.
