Skopje, 29 June 2026 (MIA) — Parliament adopted Monday a new law on gambling and entertainment games, aimed at fighting against illegal gambling and protecting citizens, epecially young people, through tighter controls and modern regulations, according to the Ministry of Finance in a press release.

The law is also expected to reduce the gray economy, help prevent money laundering and ensure a fair, transparent market for all gambling businesses.

Under the new law, promotional giveaways will require a permit and a fee. 

“Additionally, in line with the law, the Republic of Macedonia holds the sole right to organize lotteries (except for private raffles), electronic games and online gambling, through a state-owned company,” the release said. 

The law also introduces background and integrity checks for the owners and managers of gambling companies. The ministry said these provisions followed international anti-money laundering standards to build public trust.

For the first time, flashing or aggressive ads are banned, and companies are strictly prohibited from advertising on the outside of their buildings.

Also, ads cannot claim that gambling leads to financial success or solves personal and social problems. Ads are also banned from targeting minors. 

The new law also introduces a rule that gambling venues must be located at least 500 meters from elementary and high schools. mr/
