Filipche: SDSM to remain constructive on Electoral Code, but not at the cost of opening the door to election theft

Skopje, 3 July 2026 (MIA) - SDSM’s positions are clear and principled when it comes to the Electoral Code and we will remain constructive but not at the cost of opening the door to election theft, SDSM leader Venko Filipche told journalists on Friday.

The SDSM leader reiterated the party’s opposition to the idea for a change in the way the country’s diaspora votes.

"Why should there be a different voting system for the diaspora and people living abroad compared to those who live here? Why should voters here have to be identified with fingerprint scanners and so on, while someone else gets to vote electronically or by mail? Why shouldn't the voting process be equally secure for those inside the country and those outside it? That is what we are fighting for," Filipche said, underscoring that, in his view, the Government's proposed solutions expose diaspora citizens to suspicion and risks.

The opposition leader said SDSM also has remarks about other proposed amendments to the Electoral Code.

“Why shouldn’t the State Election Commission be allowed to rule on the entirety of the election material? Why must objections be formally entered into the official minutes? Someone might simply not record them. It makes no sense at all,” Filipche added.
