Skopje, 16 June 2026 (MIA) — Inactive economic zones in Delchevo, Berovo and Vinica will be converted into industrial zones and opened to local companies looking to expand production, Directorate for Technological Industrial Development Zones director Goce Dimovski told a press conference Tuesday.

Dimovski said two companies currently operated in the Struga technological development zone, employing a significant number of people. He said the government aimed to attract even more investors to the region.

He also said a new foreign investment strategy for 2027-37 was in the works since last year. The document will outline the state's investment goals, including diversifying the types of businesses it attracts.

"In accordance with the law, only specific types of activities are allowed in technological zones," Dimovski said. 

"Inactive zones like Delchevo, Berovo and Vinica will be turned into general industrial zones so we can get them running, given that the free zones restrict business activities and industrial zones can host any business, from services to manufacturing,” he said.

Dimovski said the government will also offer them to domestic companies for expansion. 

“These zones were built a long time ago, some 10 to 15 years ago, and the demographics have changed since then. Our goal is to reactivate them and help local businesses access developed land with proper infrastructure, which will boost both local and national economic growth," he said.

The TIDZ director added that the country's previous investment strategy expired in 2017. mr/
