Rio de Janeiro, 10 August 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The death toll from the severe earthquake in Colombia has risen to more than 50, officials said on Monday. 

The powerful magnitude-7.4 quake hit western Colombia at around 7:34 am (1234 GMT) in the Choco department, with tremors felt in major cities including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Pereira, Popayán, Armenia and Manizales.

Videos circulating on social media showed destroyed buildings and people rushing into the streets in panic.

The earthquake was also felt in the neighbouring countries of Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama.

The quake's epicentre was located near the town of San José del Palmar in the Choco department, some 240 kilometres west of Bogotá, at a depth of 96 kilometres, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) said on X.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the depth at 107 kilometres.

The quake comes after twin earthquakes hit neighbouring Venezuela in late June, killing more than 6,000 people.
