Thessaloniki, 4 September 2026 (MIA) – As of today, Macedonia is joining the Vertical Gas Corridor, together with Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Ukraine, Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska said before addressing the Sixth Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit.
She said work is progressing intensively on the interconnector with Greece and on establishing a connection with Serbia.
“Today I will take part in two important events. One is the Sixth Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit, and the other is the jubilee 10th Southeast Europe Energy Forum. This is very important because today we will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which means that we will finally not be left off the energy map and will be connected to the Vertical Gas Corridor. What does that mean? Until now, the corridor was planned to run from Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia all the way to Moldova and Ukraine. As of today, Macedonia and the Republic of Serbia will also be included in this energy project. We are working intensively on the interconnector with Greece, as well as on connecting the interconnector with Serbia. This means that by the end of next year, we should be ready to enable gas transit through the country, as well as increased volumes, so that we are not dependent on just one connection. This means we will also have a second border through which we can be supplied with LNG,” she added.
According to Bozhinovska, this means the country will have an alternative source of supply.
“If until now we had only one connection with the Republic of Bulgaria, and more than 85 percent of those capacities are leased long-term by Gazprom, this means that we will now have a second option, to connect with Alexandroupoli and Revithoussa. We can also become a hub supplying gas to Southeast Europe,” Bozhinovska said.
