Gostivar, 23 July 2020 (MIA) – A group of eco-activists and citizens staged a protest Thursday afternoon over activities at the regional landfill Rusino, aimed to attract public and institutional attention to the risk of uncontrolled waste disposal near Gostivar.
Citizens’ initiative “Stop Rusino, clean air for Gostivar” organized a peaceful protest in the form of a car parade through the city.
This is the second protest staged over waste disposal at Rusino and increased air pollution.
Aco-activists have asked that the landfill be relocated, thus putting an end to the poisoning of the Gostivar population and the unconscientious behavior of public communal enterprises and competent authorities.
“Waste is being burned at Rusino despite lack of capacity, although those in charge will tell you otherwise. Its location is inadequate and contributes to air pollution. Rusino is a silent killed that pollutes the entire Gostivar region. Our health is in danger, the environment – destroyed. We’re asking the landfill be shut down and this problem solved once and for all,” initiative representative Anastasija Dukoska said.
A year and a half ago, Rusino landfill issues caused foreign foundations to intervene and a decision was made to form a joint enterprise operating in nine municipalities.
A project on waste collection and disposal was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
However, officials have informed MIA that the process for establishing this waste management enterprise has been stalled.
The new enterprise is set to acquire waste containers for all nine municipalities, improve conditions at Rusino, prevent soil and groundwater contamination.
Moreover, it’s set to establish a recycling and waste selection system.
