Gerapetritis affirms Greece's support for the region's EU perspective at the 'Friends of the Western Balkans' meeting

Athens, 23 September 2024 (MIA) - Greece's political support for the integration process of Western Balkan countries into the European Union was reaffirmed by Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis during a ministerial working breakfast of the 'Friends of the Western Balkans' group held in New York, which was also attended by Minister Timcho Mucunski, MIA’s Athens correspondent reported.

According to reports from Greek media, Gerapetritis and his counterparts shared opinions on the reform agenda and the enhancement of the integration process for regional countries into the Union during the mandate of the new European Commission.

Furthermore, he emphasized Greece's political support for the EU perspective, stating that it is particularly relevant given the current major geopolitical challenges, and underscored that there are concrete and binding obligations for accession to the Union.

“Respect of the EU acquis, along with the steadfast commitment to international law and dedication to good neighborly relations, is the only path that leads to integration into the European family. At the same time, special emphasis should be placed on the implementation of reforms, particularly regarding the consolidation of the rule of law and the protection of human rights. Greece is ready to support the European orientation of the Western Balkan countries with all its resources, providing technical assistance and expertise gained from its participation in the Union for over four decades. However, it is up to the countries themselves to fulfil the required criteria,” emphasized Gerapetritis, as reported by the state agency ANA-MPA.

Ministers Mucunski and Gerapetritis, besides attending the informal meeting of the 'Friends of the Western Balkans' group, are also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting this afternoon in New York.
