Skopje, 17 April 2019 (MIA) – Major General Alenka Ermenc, the Chief of General Staff of Slovenia’s army, is heading a delegation on an official visit to North Macedonia to discuss the two countries’ military cooperation within NATO.
Major General Ermenc met with the Chief of the General Staff of the Army of North Macedonia Major General Vasko Gjurchinovski and Defense Minister Radmila Shekerinska.
Talks focused on modernizing the army, contributing troops to peacekeeping missions, and organizing multinational military exercises.
Another topic was the army’s role in dealing with the migrant crisis.
Major General Gjurchinovski assured Ermenc the excellent cooperation between the countries would continue.
Minister Shekerinska congratulated Major General Ermenc on her becoming Chief of General Staff in the Slovenian Armed Forces.
Ermenc is the first woman to hold that position in Slovenia and NATO.
Shekerinska also expressed her thanks for Slovenia’s quick ratification of North Macedonia’s accession protocol with NATO, which she said was a sign of increasingly strong partnership and defense cooperation.
Major General Ermenc, in turn, congratulated Minister Shekerinska on her efforts in the European integration process of the country and highlighted Shekerinska’s crucial role in the preparations ahead of North Macedonia’s accession to NATO.
Also discussed was the upcoming military exercise at Krivolak in June. Participants will include troops from the USA, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, and Lithuania. mr/16:42
