Macedonian airports register close to 1,8 million passengers in 2016

Macedonian airports register close to 1,8 million passengers in 2016

Skopje, 11 January 2017 (MIA) - A total of 1,794,376 passengers were handled by the two airports in Macedonia in 2016, up by 15% compared with 2015.

1,560,381 passengers were recorded in 2015 at the Alexander the Great airport in Skopje and the St. Paul the Apostle Airport in Ohrid, TAV Macedonia said on Wednesday.

According to the company, the number of operations has been also increased by 8.9%, meaning that a total of 16,883 flights have been realized.

"We are content with managing to increase the annual number of passengers two-fold, an increase compared to the EU's average and the one recorded in the region. In 2017 we pledge to continue our efforts by focusing our main goals on expanding the network of flights from the airports in Skopje and Ohrid all the while cooperating with the government, aviation institutions and the airlines," TAV Macedonia CEO Alper Ersoy said.

According to passenger traffic data, Istanbul is the most frequented destination from the Skopje airport in 2016, followed by Zurich, Vienna, Basel, Malmo and London.

As regards the participation of airlines in air transport, Wizz Air is the most frequently used company (54.8% of passengers), followed by Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Germania Flug, Pegasus Airlines and Edelweiss.

Moreover, the Skopje airport registered an increase in cargo transport in 2016 by 10.9% with a total of 3,090 tons of flight parcels. According to TAV Macedonia, the increase comes as a result of the growing export of goods and the rise in online orders delivered by plane.

"2016 was a successful year for the Ohrid airport, which saw an increase in passenger traffic, up by remarkable 39.2% annually. Thus, the Airports Council International – ACI named the St. Paul the Apostle airport the fastest growing airport in its category," the company said.

In addition to the impressive increase in traffic annually, 2016 will be also remembered by TAV Macedonia for the Skopje airport being recognized for its Airport Service Quality - an award won three times in the past five years. The Skopje airport was named the best airport in Europe in terms of airport service quality in the category of airports handling less than two million passengers. ba/15:33
