Polar wave kills at least 60 across Europe

Polar wave kills at least 60 across Europe

Skopje, 11 January 2017 (MIA) - The polar cold wave that is affecting much of Europe is believed to have killed at least 60 people, mostly homeless, or people affected by snow related accidents.

Ukraine and Belarus reported the most casualties of the cold, 24 and 10 respectively. Six deaths were reported in Poland, Romania and Slovakia each. At least seven have died in the Balkans.

Temperatures in Europe have plunged down to - 20 degrees Centigrade. Ice flows on the Danube and Sava rivers have forced an order to stop navigation, and some of the Black Sea ports are also closed due to strong winds.

The Greek Army has ordered the evacuation of 500 migrants held in a camp in the island of Lesvos, where they were accommodated in tents. They will be taken camps which provide better conditions.cc/08:53
